Ph.D. in Biology (Complutense University, Madrid) and M.Sc. in Engineering and Environmental Management (EOI Business School, Madrid). Dr. Alfaya started his professional career at the forestry sector before moving to environmental engineering, construction and infrastructures sectors. Between 1996 and 2001 he was head of the Environment Dpt. at FERROVIAL AGROMÁN, in charge of designing and implementing the first EMS ever developed for a construction company. In 2002 he was appointed Quality, Environment and H&S Director at Construction business division. In 2004 he moved to Ferrovial Corporation as Quality and Environment Director (recently integrating Health & Safety functions). From this position, he was also appointed as Chief Risk Officer (CRO) playing this role until June 2008.

Dr. Alfaya is currently President of the Spanish Green Growth Group, member of the Advisory Board of the Biodiversity Foundation (Spanish Ministry of Environment), the Sustainability Council of the CEOE (Spanish Entrepreneurs Association), the Advisory Workgroup for Certification and the Executive Committee at the Spanish National Accreditation Body (ENAC), the Steering Committee of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), and designated expert at the SDSN (UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network). He also takes part in several multi-stakeholder and dialogue forums (EU Green Growth Group, Corporate Leaders Group, One Planet Business, Social Innovation Institute at the ESADE Business School, Luis Vives Foundation…). He has been vice-president of the Green Building Council until 2016, as well as member of the ISO Strategic Advisory Board between 2006 and 2010.

Dr. Alfaya usually takes part as a lecturer in numerous meetings on sustainability, corporate responsibility, environmental management and engineering, amongst other issues. Regular teaching in several universities and business schools, including Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC) and EOI Business School.
